welcome back to another mini class this class is going to be a tutorial for knitting the vintage knitted neck scarf you can download this pattern from my knitting classes group on Facebook and it’s a really old pattern I thought it was probably first seen around the 1930s or 40s really really old patterns and I see lots of different variations for it so really cute kerchief that you wrap around your neck for warmth and the directions call are as far as materials are concerned is your gonna need two skeins of a sport weight or the kid weight yarn i new super loosely so I’m choosing a horse’s weight yarn with the size four needles called for in the pattern because I knit so loose that I’m not going to end up with cardboard dense fabric so that’s what I’m doing I would suggest making a little swatch so that you can decide if the feel of the fabric is what you like don’t be afraid to experiment so I have my yarn and needles and you’re also going to need a set of double pointed needles are the same size so I’m you can use either straight or circulars for the main project and your double pointed okay so these are our materials you set this aside if you’ve taken my beginning knitting class you will recognize at the beginning of this you’re just going to make your you’re gonna make your slip loop okay so you’re gonna make your slip loop and you’re gonna cast found two more stitches the directions they cast on three stitches so because little slip loop counts as a stitch our two extra stitches are the total are going to make up our total of three stitches so here we are with our three stitches row one is knit two stitches and slip the last stitch purlwise this is a salvage edge so we’re bring the yarn forward and then just slip the last stitches if I was gonna throw it turn around row two put the yarn in back knit one stitch and then increase now the directions don’t tell you which increase to use so you can do a yarn over you can do a make one you can do if I was gonna do a make one I would do a make one that leans to the left in this case or sorry moves to the right so any number of different types of increases that you can do here you can also do because this is varnish this you could do knit want from that I’m gonna so this one I’m gonna do backwards II cast on which is also make one so I’ve made my one stitch there and I will now that’s going to leave a tiny little hole which I’m after that I would like that effect okay now that I’ve knit my increase I’m going to knit one and slip the last stitch as if to purl so the the directions from here on out are going to be pretty much the same as what I just did knit one make an increase and then knit all the remaining stitches so you knit make an increase I’m going to keep the same increase okay so let’s just grab the yarn in your hand take your thumb behind the Strand so that you’ve looped around your thumb and then put that loop

on your needle and then knit the remaining and you’ll keep repeating this until you have increased the 24 stitches so I’m gonna do that and I will come back and show you the next step see you soon okay Here I am I’ve got a little triangle here and you can see little tiny little eyelets that I was talking about earlier but they’re very very minimal on either side and I’ve got 24 stitches okay so at this point now what I’m gonna do is I’m just going to admit I’m even without any more increases until my piece is 4 inches long so I’ll do that and I’ll come back and show you the next part okay I have a knit now and my piece is 4 inches long so I’m ready to divide okay now but this is where you’re gonna need your double pointed needles you could do the double pointed needle and you if you’re working on a circular like I am your other end of your circular heal or if you’re working with straight needles it would be a double pointed needle in your straight needle so what you’re going to do is you’re going to slip the first stitch onto your double pointed needle purlwise as if to purl you’re just gonna slide it over and then the second stitch you’re going to slip on to your working needle purlwise and then the third stitch will go on to the double pointed needle this is the chapter that will go on to the working needle double pointed needle working needle double pointed needle the working needle double pointed needle working needles double pointed needles 14 needle double pointed needle working needle double pointed needle okay so what we have done is we have divided two stitches out so that half of them are on a working needle and half of them are on your double pointed needle so the ones on the double pointed needle are just gonna hang out there and here’s my working yarn so I need to make sure that my point is on that side and I am just going to now work a knit one purl one already I’m just going to work now just on these back stitches knit one purl one ribbing and I’m going to do knit one program ribbing for about an inch and a half or two inches will hold the inch and a half so we’ll just try to ignore this first needle and then just work knit one horn horn for one and this first Rosalie

is a little awkward because of that double pointed needle there but after you get away from it last stitch as if to purl just like I was the last one okay turn around and you can already see what has happened this has been fold into a little petal shake and continue this way um for an inch and a half so I will do that and come back in just a second okay so I have knit so this is what I have this is what I have like this with these stitches still on there holder so now what I’m going to do is I’m gonna need a nice long tail at least six inches I believe those we need now to work these stitches and we’re gonna do the same thing we’ll just turn around and come in we leave the nice long tail for bohemian and then just do the same thing they were doing and now I’m working with just the double pointed heels so to join in what I normally do is I just start knitting some people don’t like this they they might fit tie on a knot or something else like that but there is no nothing to tie on to in this case so what I’m going to do is I’m just gonna stick my needle into the first stitch as if to knit I’m gonna make a little loop I guess you could do a slip loop if you’re really worried so I’ll do that just make a little loop for those that are concerned that this might come off although I generally don’t like knots but we’ll just pull that through just for those that would you know an alternative way and I am just waiting and then continue with one ribbing for one and a half inches just like you did before so I’ll do that and I’ll come back and show you the next step okay I’ve knit now so that I have another inch and a half here so I have these two flaps and when I joined them together you can see if they will create a pocket

so we have to get them back on to one needle so the way to do that is I’m now I’m taking the other end of my working needle my working circular needle people are on straight needles that would be your second your ears I can work a needle so I like to use the circular needles though because I can easily reposition the working in where I need it next to the working yarn okay so what you’re going to do is you’re going to slip the first stitch of Pro wife’s from the double pointed needle just put that one pro-life onto the working needle and then you’re going to slip 1 purlwise the next one provides from the other end of the circular needle and then one from the double pointed needle and one from the needle double pointed needle working needle we can also think of this as with your double pointed needle being in front and the working needle being in back no stitches are back on to one needle the working yarn is here so I’m just going to slide my double pointed needle to get them working in where I need it and all I’m gonna do now is continue working in garter stitch the way I was for about 15 and a half inches and I was just knitting across because we’re going back to Carter stitch just like I was doing before all the way across the 24 stitches I still have 24 stitches I haven’t blocked the stitch or game stitch in this process all I did was divide in order to be able to make a little just plain garter stitch knitting now I want to get the end of this row so you’ll see how this is some widening out and we’ve created a pocket which is seamless here and seamless on the back and I’m seamless at the top and once the ends are woven and people are going to be asking how did you do that okay so

I’m going to continue knitting my 15 and a half inches and I will come back and show you how we deal with the petal at the other end of the scarf when I get to my 15 and a half inches of our garter stitch for the body of this bar you’re going to do the same thing that you did for the petal here you’re going to divide your stitches so that you have 12 on a double pointed needle and 12 on your working yarn over work your needle and you’re going to work on inch and a half of knit one throw one ribbing on each needle just like you did this time and you’re gonna join back just like you did just now and you’re gonna work the same number of ridges that you have on this petal before the increase is stopped so in this case that was one two three four five I have five I worked five ridges so approximately ten rows and then we’ll start some decreases so when when we get to that point I’ll come back and demonstrate what I’m talking about hey I’ll see you in a bit okay welcome back I have knit my 15 and a half inches I went ahead and did the dividing part here just like I had done before the exact same procedure that we did earlier so you can just go back and review that section about you know do dividing the stitches to create this pocket and then I knit straight without any increasing or decreasing or anything I just knit across my 24 stitches for two and a half inches so what that ends up being is on five ridges two one two three four five for me for you it might be different so you can measure it out and if you want if you want to be sure that it’s gonna be exactly the same as the other side what you could do is before you go on to this separating bit that we did you know when you start here you can count your put a marker and then count your ridges from that point so then you just knit the same number of ridges on this side so in any case now I’m ready for the finishing part or the ending part going down to the end of the petal here and all that I’m going to do is knit one knit together and then knit to the end of the row slipping my last stitch purlwise as I’ve been doing throughout and then I’m gonna repeat that until I have got just three stitches left and then I’m gonna find off and then I’ll use the tapestry needle to weave in all my ends so let me go ahead and just show you the knit two together so knit one knit two togethers very simple it’s just take the next two loops this one and this one and go through them both as if they were a single loop the two together and then knit to the end I am done further than I wanted to and then I had to actually rip back on this little section here so when I put my stitches back on the needle after I after I ripped back I had got them all reoriented so I’m knitting through the back loop to reposition them to the style of knitting that I generally do which is the Continental standard continental with the right leg of the stitch facing me and turn around and do the same thing again okay so the first stitch knit the next two stitches together and knit to the end and slip the last stitch as if to purl so I’m going to continue doing that until I’m

down to my three stitches and then I’ll come back and show you bind off I’ll be with you in just a minute okay here I am and I’ve knit down until I’ve got three stitches left here so now I’m just going to bind those off normally and I’m just going to use a standard bind off knit the first stitch the second stitch because I’ve been knitting it’s a knit bind off so I’m just going to grab the first stitch I worked and fold it over the second stitch I worked with the last one and pull over cut my yarn nice long tail okay and then just pull the friend now I can just weave my hands in but after I leave my engine what will what you will do is you will pull one petal pete’ll bottom very pretty gathered petal bottom there and the part that goes around your neck very easy pattern extremely easy pattern I hope you enjoy making it and don’t forget to go to my facebook any classes group to download the pattern and I’ll see you next time
