we turned in the Word of God to Ephesians chapter to Ephesians chapter 2 and you have a quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins word in time past ye walked according to the course of this world according to the Prince of the power of the air the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature children of Wrath even as others here’s our text 4 through 7 but God who is rich in mercy in for his great love wherewith he loved us even when we were dead in sins hath quickened us together with Christ by grace ye are saved and hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of His grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus for by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God not of works lest any man should boast for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them so far we read from God’s Holy Word visions two verses four through seven stand is a very strong and sharp contrast to the description that’s given us as we are by nature in verses 1 2 & 3 there’s a narrow path that has very wide ditches on each side and that narrow path is a correct balanced perspective of who we are in christ jesus one wide ditch is an understanding of our depravity that is so powerful and so strong that it’s not uncommon for me to be asked preach the law and tell me how great a sinner I am it’s a an experiential spiritual masochism where we want to be beaten down because we’re so bad and that’s all that’s ever talked about that’s the only perspective but on the other side of that narrow path is a ditch that’s just as wide and it’s a practical Arminianism watch what happens inside of you when somebody points a finger of accusation to you watch how you become defensive watch how you make excuses watch how you shift the blame for anything you might have done to somebody else watch yourself in an argument or any debate on any issue and see how sure you are that they’re wrong and you’re right now to

walk the road to walk the path to keep the balanced right biblical perspective it is not that the Bible is unclear about that narrow path it’s how we hear it it’s how we think it it’s how we understand the scriptures a part of the description of that path is given to us here in this passage of God’s Word we must be careful that we do not think that the description belongs to some elite or that it can’t belong to me listen to the but God with which the text begins but God did three things three amazing things why did he do them because of three things that are found in him unto what entity to them that he might show the exceeding riches of himself in the ages to come what are the three things that the text describes that he does and did he made us alive he raised us and he gave us the ability to sit in the heavenly places these are not about to happen these are not something that he is beginning to do but yet has not finished these are all things he has already done past tense they’re accomplished their accomplished not for some they are accomplished for every one of those that he is given to Jesus Christ every single one of them the first thing is he quickened us he quickened us admittedly that’s an old English way of saying he made us alive he made us alive we were verse 1 spiritually dead in sins and Trust buses still physically alive because verse 2 says we walked but spiritually dead so the quickening the making of us alive is the parallel to that sort of death we are alive spiritually no longer incapable of doing good but able were alive we are breathing spiritually we have a life within us maybe the best description of that life is for me just two pages earlier Galatians 2 verse 20 I am crucified with Christ nevertheless I live yet not i but Christ liveth in me and the life that I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me I live Christ liveth in me I live not not just substitution airily I live he quickened us we are regenerated a new life is implanted within us a new governing disposition sits inside of our hearts we are able to know God to be God we are able to know and believe that Jesus is the Son of God and believing in them we know of his relationship to us as it’s revealed to us in his word we know these things because we’re alive to these spiritual

realities notice we’re quickened together with Christ the second thing that he says of us is in verse 6 and raised past tense raised us up were crucified with Christ our old man is crucified with christ romans 6 but were also raised unto newness of life very similar idea to that quickening but were no longer held under the Dominion of God’s wrath that’s death death as the wages of said we’re no longer held under the Dominion of God’s wrath in fact let’s put it this way God can no longer hold us under his wrath God must raise us just as he had to raise Jesus from the dead because all of this the death that we deserved his wrath for our sins are gone the sins are gone so the wrath is gone so he has to raise us up together we have a new power at work maybe we don’t exercise that power all the time or even very often as we ought but it’s not because we don’t have that power of a new life inside of us so that we can think good and do good we are to use the language of the canons delivered from the Dominion and slavery of sin the devil does not have the right he tries oh he and sometimes maybe many times it seems he succeeds but he does not have the right to rule over us we can with the authority of Jesus Christ say get behind Jesus stand defeated by him his foot hands on your head you’re destroyed you don’t have the right I can say no I can say I’m sorry i can say i might not be right i might not see everything correctly we can say that were raised to that louisville and were made again past tense to sit in heavenly places made to sit in heavenly places that new life that God has given to every single one of his people takes us who are otherwise locked in to the realm of the earthly and he opens our vision to the heavenly so that the the Apostle Peter can say you’re here you are citizens of the United States but really your citizens of the kingdom of heaven you are made to sit literally in the heavenlies your citizens of the that makes you unearthed a pilgrim you’re a traveler no abiding place you’re like the Apostle that like Abraham the patriarchs Abraham Isaac and Jacob they dwelt in tents and that was a very real representation to them that they were looking for a city which hath foundations whose builder and maker is God they were looking ahead they were looking up and being made to sit in the heavenlies is also an assurance that it may it may look like sins growing in the United States it may look like we are being surrounded more and more by executive orders that make and allow sin to abound right is called wrong

increasingly but God doesn’t whisper god shouts it to us get it my beloved children get it you are a victor it looks like you’re the cause that you represent is being defeated but you are more than conquerors don’t go by how you feel because it looks like we’re don’t win at all we look like sin his winning but you’re a conqueror and you’re a conqueror simply because of something that you cannot see but I’m going to tell you of God says I love you and nothing can separate you from my love nothing now he does these three things with us together he doesn’t just do i’ll pick this one and then i’ll pick that one of my child I have all of my children we r us it is together and then this and here’s the really you know we get to the second point what are the reasons because we are in Christ Jesus how many times doesn’t he say that in this book and now in this text in Christ Jesus he hath quickened us together with Christ he has raised us up together and made us sit together in Christ Jesus there is a relationship we no earthly relationships marriages siblings children family God says there’s a relationship that surpasses all of these these are great these are pictures though they’re just pictures they’re not forever they won’t last they are till death but there’s a relationship that is forever and ever and that relationship is that he are we are in Christ there’s a verse in Genesis 2 about Abraham when he saw ii for the first time it’s something that God says of us and we are to say of him we are bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh we are that connected he is the captain of our salvation he is the head we are the body were one with him what makes that union so that these powerful three things can take place three things but God first verse 4 is rich in mercy rich in mercy mercy God has bowels of mercies and that figure is to describe that that this isn’t just a light thought that God has once in a while but the depths of his being out of the bottom if you will of his belly is divine belly comes this desire we desire things God has a desire and that desire is to bless to make spiritually rich to bless those that are beggars miserable homeless mercy is something that he only gives to the miserable well he gives it praise the Lord he gives it all the time but our experience of that we are in need of mercy or that we thank him for his mercy that’s new every morning only if we admit were miserable were homeless not because everything was taken from us but because we don’t know how to live we can’t abide living with everybody else we can only live with ourselves where

that miserable we admit it then you taste that desire of God to bless that always accomplishes its purpose second rich mercy great love wherewith he loved us love does past tense again he loved us when did he start loving you wrong question wrong answer he never started he’s always had it as long as he’s been he has loved you eternally eternally and what is that love that great love from which nothing can separate us that’s that intimate knowledge where he knows it’s the cause of election it’s the cause of Christ well were yet sinners God loved us he so loved that He gave His only begotten Son how long is that love it’s from all eternity and it will go into all eternity how deep is the that love it arises out of the eternal depths of God’s own heart how deep is that love that love went and keeps going all the way down to hell to get us because every one of my sins makes me worthy of that hell and that love unconditionally he doesn’t love me because I’m starting to love him he doesn’t love me because I’m good enough it’s all great love how broad is that love it’s breath is that it includes his luck children out of every nation in every age how high is that love he who ascended descended first he who thought it not robbery to be counted equal with God a love that exalts us into heavenly places a love which according to chapter 1 verse 3 blesses us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ Jesus our Lord rich mercy great love and verse 8 verse 7 the exceeding riches of His grace the exceeding riches of His grace the Song of Solomon Sullivan’s wife looked at him and said he is lovely the Hebrew word that’s translated grace starts with the meaning of beauty so when we look at God’s gift of grace to us we have to always start with him just like we do with all of these virtues it all starts with God grace says God is beautiful perfectly beautiful God is lovely but that grace is also a attitude an attitude that’s favorable it comes out of that lovely God and comes forth out of him and when it comes out of him it comes to those who don’t deserve it so as lovely in beautiful and gracious as he is the recipients of that particular grace not common that particular grace is that we are horribly ugly filthy dirty that attitude of beauty in God comes out of him and it reaches down all the way to us and it’s not just he has grace for us undeserved love but it’s it’s a power his mercy his love his grace is a power a power to take us undeserved sinners and lift us

up he saves us Beauty attitude a favor undeserved attitude a favor which is a power to save and the nature of that salvation is that he so transforms us that here’s another way in which this word grace is translated we thank him we go right back up to that beautiful God who’s made us by His grace beautiful and you know when were the most beautiful when we’re thanking you when we are expressing our gratitude to him he unites us to Christ he saves us rich mercy great love exceeding riches of His grace why so that we can go through this life and we’re better than them look at him wallow in sin they want to Train change their genders I would never do that they want to say that homosexuality is good I would never do that I’ve never murdered maybe a little farm language nothing worse than that he doesn’t save us to set us up as trophies he saves us in order to show himself and to show the exceeding riches of his undeserved love he shows himself in the ages to come 2016 he is showing how wonderful a god he is the greatness of a character of a God who would save what he makes creatures his created beings what an amazing character in that God’s grace to save wretched stinking sinners that’s what he wants to show and that’s what he is showing whether we see it or not whether we realize or appreciate how great that is or not he is showing that and he will to all eternity so that we will then be able to say blessing and glory and wisdom and Thanksgiving and honor and power and might be unto our God forever and ever amen let us pray we thank the gracious God never enough but be our teacher take thy spirit and put these truths in us that in ever increasingly rich ways we may appreciate what thou has done in Jesus Christ now we may we take what thou has done may we remember the death he died because of thy mercy love and grace amen
